Coming straight out of California, Ras Ceylon is an emcee,
educator and organizer bringing revolutionary music, a hip-hop meets
reggae dynamic and explosively conscious lyrics. Drawing on his Sri
Lankan roots and Rastafarian faith, Ras Ceylon brings a unique sound
intertwining militant messages with head nodding beats. With a musical
career spanning the past 15 years, Ras Ceylon's intersection of sounds
of dancehall, hip-hop, Cali flavor and Oakland grime delivers an audio
soundscape with the complexity and breadth that makes him a true
musical anomaly. Starting at the early age of 14, Ras Ceylon got his
first start as the emcee of a local DJ crew spinning at local spots
across Southern California. By 1999, Ceylon had released 1st Lesson EP
aka The Red Tape, a cassette tape EP he slung by the hundreds at shows
and on the streets.
An accomplished emcee, Ras Ceylon has released many acclaimed
albums over the past decade. In 2004 he came with "The Collegraduate:
Lessons 1999-2004" and then in 2008 he released
"Scientific/Non-Fiction" on Throwback Records with the hit single and
video "Betta B Ready", which aired on major media outlets such as
MTV-Jams, B.E.T., MTV-UK, Comcast OnDemand and others. In 2011, Ras
Ceylon released his 4th studio album: "Gideon.Force Vol.1", a
mixtape/street album that returns Ras Ceylon to his Rasta influenced
lyrics and conscious driven energy. Having collaborated with such
artists such as Jamaican stars Munga Honorable, Sizzla's JudgmentYard
& Norris Man to hip-hop legends dead prez, Tragedy Khadafi and
Hieroglyphics Ras Ceylon's musical output is respected at the highest
level by his peers and core audience.
Most recently before relocating temporarily to Sri Lanka, Ras
released "Gideon.Force V2: Repatriation Time". This album has spawned
two hits singles with "Repatriation Time" spending *11 weeks (4 weeks
at Number 1) on 99.2 TNL Radio's Criminal Records Most Wanted
Countdown and 5 weeks on the YES Home Grown Top 15 (YES101 Sri Lanka's
Number 1 Hit Music Station) while receiving constant rotation on the
channel. Both "Repatriation Time" & "Heal Lanka" were released on
radio in August 2012 after which they entered the chart on listener
driven demand. In keeping with the demand for live performances he
performed regularly in Sri Lanka at events such as several Alternative
Sundays and going on to bigger shows such as SHOWDOWN & Future Leaders
Conference (Jaffna) organized by Sri Lanka Unites, Y-FM's Sundown
Concert (Negombo), After A/L Concert (Kandy) and Turn Up The Music
(Viharamahadevi Amphitheatre)
He was also interviewd on several Sri Lankan radio and television
shows such as, Yes Home GrownLIFE Online's Sound Vault, Planet Urban
ETV and ChillPill-MTV Sports. In addition to radio and television,
local newspapers in Sri Lanka that ran featured articles on him
include DailyFT, Ceylon Today & Sunday Times. Shortly before leaving
Sri Lanka, Ras Ceylon collaborated with Sri Lankan Film production
team "Grind Out Pictures" to shoot a cinematic music video for his
single, "Heal Lanka." "Heal Lanka" the music video is Ras Ceylon's
mission statement for moving Sri Lanka into this new post-war era.
Look for "Heal Lanka" video to be released in early 2013. With social
conscious lyrics weaved throughout his music, Ras Ceylon walks the
talk. In addition to the music work, Ras Ceylon is an Oakland
community activist working to empower youth on a number of issues
around social justice and education. Also having worked and lived
internationally in places such as Jamaica and Sri Lanka it is clear
that his outlook is broader than most American rappers. Ras Ceylon
lives the message he speaks about in his music.
